Like the whirlpool itself, Corryvreckan is not for the faint-hearted! The history of mapping in and around Scotland is quite interesting and I hope to track down the earliest mention of Corryvreckan either on a map or in accompanying texts. We finally arrived at the wild waters of Corryvreckan Whirlpool (coinciding with the flood tide), and watched in awe as the water bubbled and burst, and swirled over and around the rock pinnacle which lies about 30 metres below the surface, and which helps create this incredible whirlpool; the surface currents created by this rushing water and the sea-floor protuberances are truly freakish and mesmerising (and slightly scarey).
